Every August, the Asagaya Pearl Center shopping arcade in Tokyo transforms into a whimsical wonderland. This is the Asagaya Tanabata Festival, a beloved local tradition since 1954. It’s known for drawing huge crowds into its magical atmosphere.
Many Tanabata (Star Festival) celebrations focus on bamboo wishes. But Asagaya’s is famous for something much bigger: gigantic, handmade ‘haribote’ (papier-mâché figures). They dangle from the ceiling, turning the entire street into a gallery of pop culture and tradition.
The Legend of the Star Festival

Giant Papier-Mâché Art
The creativity of the local shop owners shines in these haribote. For example, during my 2023 visit, the quality was astounding. A massive Monkey D. Luffy from One Piece hung from the ceiling, seeming ready to leap into action. Another favorite was the Arcadia, Captain Harlock’s iconic pirate spaceship, floating ominously with its skull and crossbones emblem, a fantastic tribute to a classic anime.
During the festival, many shops set up stalls in front of their premises. Most sell food and drinks. But some even offer games like goldfish scooping. It’s completely different from Zojoji Temple’s Tanabata.

A festival governed by the old calendar

A unique Tokyo festival
The Asagaya Tanabata Festival is a must-see for its unique, community-driven charm. It offers a fantastic second chance to celebrate Tanabata in August with a style you won’t find anywhere else in Tokyo. The event is a perfect blend of tradition, pop culture, and local artistry.
Tips for attending
- Look up! The best photo opportunities are right above you. Aim your camera toward the ceiling to capture the scale of the haribote.
- Dress the part: Many festival-goers wear colorful yukatas (summer kimonos), adding to the festive atmosphere.
- Stay hydrated: The arcade roof offers shade, but Tokyo’s August heat is intense. Keep a drink with you, as you will be doing a lot of walking in a crowded space.
- Check train schedules: Only local trains stop at Asagaya Station on weekends. Do not take an express train from Shinjuku if you are visiting on Saturday or Sunday.
- The festival is a shopping mall, so leave the tripods at home.
