Tokyo Game Show 2017 Event Photography
Tokyo Game Show 2017 was huge. Models, cosplay, display booths, and live events filled the day. The excitement was palpable. New console titles were everywhere. From start to finish, it was perfect for photography. I was more than impressed and went home with an SD card full of photos.
What was at Tokyo Game Show 2017?
TGS always has many stage events. One company brought along something different in 2017, Japanese-style wrestling. If you have never seen it, you should, as it is entertaining. They had female and male matches. The wrestlers were athletic and fun to watch.
PC gaming and VR trends
A good thing for the gaming industry was that more PC and console games were on display than mobile phones. The Sony Xperia booth was big, but those of other companies were much smaller in size and number at TGS 2017. VR gaming showed growth, which is a trend we know will continue.
The Wargaming and World of Tanks booth
I play Wargaming’s World of Tanks and they disappointed me which was sad. They downsized again. They had a big booth, but no big tanks. In previous years, the combination of models and a massive AFV brought hordes of photographers. It was sad not to see that in 2017.
In years past, they had mock-ups of the WW2 O-Ho Japanese tank and the smaller Type 95 tank, but nothing on Business Day 2017. Is that a reflection of the game’s state? I’m not sure, but it was a pity they had nothing huge to photograph. Maybe something might change when the public attends on Saturday and Sunday.
Models are an integral part of TGS
I didn’t go on the public holidays, which was a shame. More models would have been there. What would Tokyo Game Show 2017 be without them? How many photographers would attend the event if they disappeared? The girls and the outfits I photographed were stunning.
The girls and boys who work at these events have a great work ethic from what I’ve seen. Many of them wear elaborate outfits or sometimes next to nothing, and work under bright lights. And they do it with a smile. At the end of their shift, they must be exhausted.
Photography tips
- The event is crowded, so be patient when waiting for your shots
- Models are popular people, so try to work as fast as possible. Take it as a given, someone will be behind you waiting their turn.
- The models are 100% no touch. If you need something ask, and if you don’t speak Japanese, gesture. The overwhelming majority of them are understanding, kind and considerate.
- For more information, check the official Tokyo Game Show website.

Where was Tokyo Game Show held?
Makuhari Messe was the venue. It’s the same place as Tokyo Auto Salon. To learn more, check out the official website.
The enormous convention center is in Chiba Prefecture, outside of Tokyo. For me, traveling there on the two-hour train ride with camera gear is like a marathon event. Joining me on the ride were 1000s of event staff, fans, and photographers. We were crammed into a small space, all converging on that one destination.
Was Tokyo Game Show 2017 worth it?
I love Tokyo Game Show 2017. Every year is awesome and this time was no different. Yes, with the crowds the event is taxing. But with new games and great models, the noise and the lights, it is exciting. You should visit it at least once if you love gaming. Luckily, it will return in 2018. I’m sure it will be great.
