In 2017, my visit to Hanegi Park near for the annual plum blossom season was nothing short of magical. That particular week in Tokyo was graced with brilliant blue skies just like at Yushima Tenjin a week earlier. It was a memorable season for flower photography.
A serene Tokyo Plum Blossom photo spot
Hanegi Park, for most of the year, is a typical local spot in Tokyo. However, it undergoes a breathtaking transformation in spring when its plum trees bloom. This spectacle sets it apart from other popular viewing locations like Yushima Tenjin, which, while featuring a shrine and is lively, can get crowded. Hanegi offers a more serene experience. It has its own share of stalls, a teahouse, and entertainment, but the focus remains fixed on the beauty of the flowers. The atmosphere is laid-back and quiet.
Arriving early in the morning, the park was nearly deserted, save for a few locals on their morning walks—some with dogs, others jogging. It was a genuine slice of suburban Tokyo life.
A rare view of Mount Fuji from Hanegi Park
A delightful surprise awaited during this visit. For the first time in many trips to the park, the majestic Mount Fuji was visible through the trees. It was a rare and memorable sight, perfectly framed by the delicate plum blossoms.
Edit: This special view, however, is now gone as a new building has since obstructed the line of sight. 2017 was the last time I saw Mount Fuji from the park.
Plum blossom photography reflections
Looking back at these photographs over five years later prompts a critical reflection on my growth as a photographer. To be frank, many of the images fall short. The most significant issue is a lack of a clear subject. In my enthusiasm, I likely saw a beautiful flower and simply clicked the shutter without much thought.
This is a common trait among beginner photographers—seeing something appealing and immediately pressing the shutter button. It’s a habit I’ve worked hard to overcome. Perhaps this stemmed from a lack of understanding of photography and art in my younger years. Concepts like composition and lighting were foreign to me. Now, I am dedicated to honing these skills, though progress is a gradual process.
Despite my self-critique, the photograph featuring Mount Fuji remains a source of pride. The weather-dependent nature of this shot makes it a rare capture. Having visited the park many times, this remains the only occasion I’ve photographed the iconic mountain from that vantage point.
