Have you ever photographed flying aircraft from so close that you can almost see the cabin crew walk the aisles inside? There is a location with an almost endless line of ANA, JAL, and Skymark jets for that.
That spot is Kyowa Bridge, a great plane-spot location due to its proximity to Haneda Airport. The icing on the cake is that you don’t even need a huge lens to get stunning shots.
How to get to Kyowa Bridge
- Take the Tokyo Monorail from Hamamatsucho Station to Showajima Station.
- Leave via the East Exit and walk ten minutes to the bridge. It’s easy.

What camera lenses to use
I used my Fujifilm X-T3 with the XF100-400mm lens, but I was surprised by how versatile this spot is. Many of my best shots were actually between 100mm and 200mm (on a crop sensor camera).
You don’t need a massive lens to fill the frame with an ANA Boeing 787 like if you shot from Haneda Airport’s Terminal 3 observation deck. My Fujinon 55-200mm lens would have been perfect.
Shorter telephotos or standard kit lenses might work well. Let me know if you try.
Why shoot from Kyowa Bridge?
- Multiple angles: The bridge’s position allows you to capture aircraft head-on as they approach, from the side as they pass directly in front of you, and from the rear as they continue their descent.
- Unobstructed views (mostly): You get a clear line of sight for most of the approach. (Note: A building does block the final touchdown on the runway.)
- A bonus backdrop: On a clear day, you might even be rewarded with a view of Mount Fuji. Few aircraft move in its direction, though.
Runway 16R operations & lighting times
To get the best shots, keep these key details in mind (A big thanks to the excellent resource Spotterguide.net for some of this information).
When to visit for the light (golden hour)
- Best light: The ideal time to shoot is from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., especially in the summer. The sun will be behind you, perfectly lighting up the aircraft. Winter afternoons are also suitable.
- Morning shoots: While you can also shoot from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m., be prepared to shoot into the sun, which can be more challenging.
Landing on Runway 16R at Haneda
- Proximity: It’s less than two kilometers away at Haneda Airport, guaranteeing impressively close views.
Facilities & safety
- There are no convenience stores near the bridge, only vending machines. Buy what you need before getting on the monorail.
- The pedestrian path on the bridge is pretty and sloped. Be careful of bicycles that whizz past.
- There is no cover near Kyowa Bridge, so take an umbrella in case of rain. Keep hydrated in summer. I left with heatstroke the first time I went.

Kyowa Bridge has quickly become my new go-to spot, replacing old favorites with its easy access and thrillingly close passes. If you’re looking for a hassle-free and rewarding day of plane spotting at Haneda, this is the place to be.
