After years of searching for the perfect hanami experience, I can say it with confidence. Shinjuku Gyoen is the best cherry blossom spot in Tokyo.

While I adore the moody, atmospheric lanes of Aoyama Cemetery, it’s not for everyone. Shinjuku Gyoen is simply unmatched. It’s experience delivers on every level for every person. It combines epic scale with peaceful serenity in a way no other park can. Here’s why it earns the top spot.

5 reasons Shinjuku Gyoen is the best Hanami spot

1. A longer sakura season with 68 tree varieties

Most parks have one shot at peak bloom. Shinjuku Gyoen, however, boasts over 1,000 cherry trees from 68 different varieties. This includes both early and late-blooming trees, extending the sakura season from mid-March all the way to late April. You have a much wider window to catch the magic.

2. Massive grounds mean more space, less stress

Covering a staggering 58 hectares (144 acres), Shinjuku Gyoen offers a welcome escape from the city’s notorious crowds. At some popular spots, you’re shoulder-to-shoulder. Here, you can still find a peaceful corner to put down a blanket, walk freely, and take photos without a forest of selfie sticks in your shot.

3. Pristine environment and managed crowds

As a national garden with a small entrance fee, Shinjuku Gyoen is pristine. The grounds are litter-free, the rules (like no alcohol) ensure a calm atmosphere, and the flow of people is managed. This prevents the all-day chaos common in other free parks during hanami season.

4. Endless opportunities for photography

From wide-angle shots of cherry trees framing the skyline to macro close-ups of delicate petals, the photo opportunities are endless. The park’s three distinct garden styles—English Landscape, French Formal, and Japanese Traditional—provide a stunning variety of backdrops for your photos. The interplay of light and shadow during the golden hour is breathtaking.

5. Easy access from Shinjuku Station

Located just a short walk from the bustling Shinjuku Station, the park is incredibly accessible. Stepping inside feels like entering another world, leaving the noise of the city far behind. It’s the perfect blend of convenience and escape.

Aren’t other cherry blossom spots in Tokyo good?

Of course, places like Ueno Park and the Meguro River are beautiful, but they can’t compete with Shinjuku Gyoen’s all-around excellence. They suffer from overcrowding that can detract from the serene experience that cherry blossoms are meant to inspire.

Is Shinjuku Gyoen Tokyo’s best cherry blossom spot?

When I visited the park on April 7, 2025 for these photos, the weather was perfect. It was a brilliant blue sky with just a few wispy clouds. The blossoms were at their peak, and as I left the park, I felt completely content.

With its unmatched variety, sprawling space, and picture-perfect scenery, Shinjuku Gyoen (official website) ticks every box. It is the most complete and best cherry blossom spot in Tokyo.
