Every August, the Asagaya Pearl Center shōtengai (a traditional covered shopping street) transforms into a wonderland for the Tanabata Star Festival, and 2024 was no exception. Stepping into the arcade felt like walking into a dream, with hundreds of giant, whimsical papier-mâché figures dangling overhead, from beloved anime characters to J-League soccer players and Winnie the Pooh.
Asagaya Tanabata Festival 2024 experience
The air was thick with the delicious smells of festival food, as many shops set up tables right on the street. We saw smoky yakisoba sizzling on hot plates, tempting stacks of sweet soy-glazed dango, and towers of refreshing shaved ice (kakigōri) piled high with syrup. It was perfect for a Tokyo family day out, with crowds happily mingling under the colourful decorations. The entire length of the Asagaya Pearl Center becomes a sea of color.
In most years, the regular dolls included Thomas the Tank Engine, Jack Sparrow, Paddington Bear, and Captain Harlock hanging in prominent places. This time, they were nowhere to be seen.
For any fan of Japanese summer festivals, the Asagaya Tanabata is a must-see. The festival is held on July 7 in most places but the Asagaya Pearl Center follows the old Japanese calendar and has its celebrations in early August and runs for about five days.
Pro-Tip for your visit: Go on a weekday afternoon if you can. You’ll still experience the incredible atmosphere but with slightly fewer crowds, making it easier to get those perfect photos. The closest station is JR Asagaya Station, just a minute’s walk away.
