Photos of Hibiya Park Chrysanthemum Exhibition 2019
In the autumn of 2019, Hibiya Park, a green oasis in the heart of Tokyo, hosted a truly exceptional chrysanthemum exhibition. While the park is renowned for its magnificent rose displays that draw large crowds each year, the annual chrysanthemum show is a lesser-known yet equally captivating event. The 2019 showcase was particularly memorable, featuring some of the most exquisite flowers I have ever had the pleasure of photographing.
Though the exhibition space might have been more modest than that of Shinjuku Gyoen, the quality of the chrysanthemums was unparalleled. Growers from across the region gathered to present their finest specimens, and the result was a breathtaking display of color, form, and artistry. The weather was perfect, creating ideal conditions for a day of photography and appreciation of these autumnal blooms.
Bonsai chrysanthemums: A unique floral art
One of the most exciting discoveries for me at the 2019 exhibition was the art of bonsai chrysanthemums. Until then, I had never encountered these miniature marvels. These are not ancient, woody trees, but rather chrysanthemums meticulously trained to mimic the shape and scale of traditional bonsai within a single growing season.
I was initially under the impression that cultivating these intricate floral sculptures would be a difficult task, requiring unique and challenging techniques. However, a conversation with one of the growers revealed a surprising insight. He explained that the process is not as difficult as it appears; the key lies in careful and precise cutting to achieve the desired shape. This Japanese art form, known as ‘Chrysanthemum tray planting’, showcases the versatility of the flower and the dedication of its cultivators.

The 2019 Hibiya Park Chrysanthemum Exhibition was, without a doubt, a standout event. Every aspect, from the quality of the flowers to the perfect weather, contributed to an unforgettable experience. While Hibiya Park’s roses may receive more attention due to its central location surrounded by businesses, the chrysanthemum festival deserves to be celebrated.
