Aviation Photography Practice at Haneda

I’ve always loved the moment an airliner finally comes into view. You know how it starts. There is nothing but an empty horizon, and then a tiny dot appears, growing larger and more defined by the second. Eventually, you see the massive vessel, perhaps carrying several hundred people. I used to find myself wondering: Where did they come from? Where are they going? As a kid, that sense of wonder sparked my interest in aviation, and it’s a feeling that has never really left me. Well, I never became a pilot, but I can do the next best thing, aviation photography.

However, I didn’t actually begin my aviation photography journey until 2021, when I decided to visit Haneda Airport’s Terminal 3. Even though I was a complete beginner at plane spotting, the experience wasn’t a disappointment at all. In fact, tracking those airliners through my lens was so enjoyable that I found myself planning a return trip only a few months later.

Lighting and composition for planes

My first attempt at plane spotting at Haneda Airport taught me a lot, mostly because the results weren’t exactly what I envisioned. The photos from that day were dominated by a flat, stubborn overcast. For my second visit, I was looking for something specific: the deep blues of a clear sky and the warm, directional light of the early evening. I wanted to see if I could catch the airliners during that brief window of descent when the light hits the fuselage just right. I realize I set my sights quite high for a hobbyist, but that’s part of the fun.

I am the first to admit that I am still very much in the learning phase. There are things about this hobby that I am only beginning to understand, but composition is particularly challenging.

Best Haneda Airport spotting locations

Looking back at my recent shots, I noticed a pattern. Most of the aircraft are framed against a busy backdrop of industrial buildings, bridges, or other stationary planes. While these details add context, they often make it hard to isolate the subject. Most of my photos are simple side-on profiles, which has motivated me to look beyond the terminal observation decks. I’ve started searching for new angles that allow for a bit more visual breathing room.

I have also visited a few peripheral sites like Jonanjima Seaside Park and Keihinjima Tsubasa Park. Both are excellent spots for getting a different perspective on the runways, and they offer a nice change of pace from the airport crowds.

However, for this particular session, I stayed at Terminal 3. I wanted to see if I could improve my results in a familiar place before moving on. This time, the weather cooperated. The sky was filled with textured clouds and sudden patches of sunlight and blue sky. It was a good reminder that sometimes, practicing in the same spot twice is the best way to see how much you’re actually improving.

Why I photograph airliners

I’ve loved aircraft since I was a child. Various problems prevented me from obtaining a pilot’s licence but photography has provided me with another route to be interested in aircraft.

For me, aviation photography is about the lines of the aircraft, the way they manage to look both graceful and incredibly powerful during takeoff and landing. And, of course, there is always that small thrill of seeing a plane in a rare or special livery glide onto the tarmac.

Photography gear for this shoot

For these photos, I used the Fujifilm X-T3 and the Fujinon XF100-400mm F4.5-5.6 R LM OIS WR lens. That pair provided enough reach at Haneda Airport. Currently, I don’t have a long zoom for Canon EOS R5, just a 24-105mm. Hopefully, I can get something longer in the not too distant future. Once I do, I’ll be back to aviation photography in a serious way.

Haneda is great for aviation photography

Haneda Airport is incredibly easy to reach. The Haneda Monorail from Hamamatsucho takes less than fifteen minutes. It’s an effortless trip.

Beyond the convenience, Haneda offers a unique space for consistent practice. You likely won’t build a perfect portfolio in a single afternoon, but that is the beauty of the craft. No visit gives you the same aircraft, lighting, and weather. Every time is different.

There is a certain romance in aviation photography. It blends technical precision with the thrill of seeing these massive machines glide toward the horizon or come towards us. For me, spending an afternoon on the observation deck with a camera is more than just passing time; it is about the quiet satisfaction of improving a difficult skill. The next will hopefully give me something different or better. To learn more, look at [Plane Spotting at Haneda Airport].
