Hamarikyu Gardens Plum Blossoms Meet Tokyo’s Skyscrapers

Hamarikyu Gardens is one of Tokyo’s best parks. There is much to see there, something for every season. But one of its main attractions are spring’s plum blossoms.

The 2023 blooms were simply awesome. Despite countless visits to the park, this was my first time truly experiencing them, and it was long overdue.

Perfect combination: Plum blossoms & rapeseed
One of the best things about Hamarikyu Gardens is that every season offers something special, from the winter falcon displays to its incredible spring blooms. On this particular visit, I got doubly lucky. Not only were the plum blossoms at their peak, but the rapeseed flowers were also in full bloom.

The yellow background for the plum blossoms was amazing. I don’t think anywhere else in Tokyo has anything similar.

Photography dream: Flowers meet the skyscrapers
The secret is clearly out, as the park was bustling with Tokyo’s photographers, and for good reason. What sets Hamarikyu’s plum blossoms apart are the incredible surroundings.

Shiodome’s modern skyscrapers created a dramatic, uniquely Tokyo backdrop that you won’t find anywhere else. To add to the composition, there’s even a small shrine with a torii gate nestled right near the grove, making it easy to blend traditional and contemporary elements into a single shot.
My photography kit for Hamarikyu Gardens
For these photos, I used my Fujifilm X-T3 and the 16-55 mm lens. For some shots, I added a Godox flash to gently fill in shadows and make the blossoms pop against the bright sky. It wasn’t much gear to carry.

Everything fit compactly into my shoulder bag. I know I’ve said it many times, but a macro lens would be great to add to my kit.

A unique Tokyo spring scene
So, my first time witnessing Hamarikyu’s plum blossoms definitely lived up to the hype. The unique blend of flowers, rapeseed, and cityscape made it a standout experience in 2023. I only wish I hadn’t waited so long!
